What To Consider When Shipping Hazardous Materials

Transportation of dangerous goods is always going to be a tricky task to organize, particularly if this is your first time. While getting the right address and postage material for a regular delivery can be hard enough, doing so for a hazardous shipment requires careful negotiation of federal laws and the rules and regulations of your chosen postal service. There are many companies that can help you with your shipment of hazardous materials, and this can save you a lot of time and effort, but you will always need to consider the following three things when shipping your items.

Packaging

There are a myriad of rules when it comes to shipping your hazardous materials from making sure they are packaged correctly and tightly to choosing shipping methods that are not susceptible to the hazardous material inside. You need to consider if your material gets more dangerous when wet, how much padding it needs, and whether it can be shipped with other items as well. It is almost always easier to simply talk to an expert in the shipping hazardous materials sector rather than trying to figure this out for yourself. When dropping your package off, if your materials are not properly packed, then they will simply be refused.

Mode Of Travel

Some chemicals and elements cannot be shipped in certain methods because they are liable to become explosive, corrosive or otherwise dangerous. For those that cannot travel in the air or by rail, you will need a special courier to deliver your items. Sometimes the materials may be able to travel in the air but only in a cargo plane, not a transport and cargo plane. If you have no idea what your hazardous materials can and cannot be shipped with, call an expert and don't risk the lives of those whose job it is to ferry them to their location.

Contracts

Most of the time when you ship hazardous goods, you will be required to sign contracts and forms declaring what it is, asserting you have packaged it correctly, identifying where it is going, and so on. You can never simply put a dangerous item in the regular post and hope it will be delivered, as you may be fined or even prosecuted if found out. Make sure that before you hand over your hazardous material, you have found and correctly filled out the right paperwork to keep everyone who needs to know in the loop about your dangerous package.
